So what is SEO?
Here’s a simple guide to what Search Engine Optimisation is, and why it’s so important to your website.
Search Engine Optimisation or SEO, is the process of improving a websites search engine ranking.
When searching for a word or phrase, Google, and other search engines display links to sites listed by what they consider the most relevant and authoritative at the top of the page.
The authority of a site is mostly measured by the number and quality of links from other web pages pointed back to the site.
The relevancy of a site is measured by the amount of, you guessed it, relevant, quality content on the site compared to the keyword or phrase searched for.
So how do you go about doing this?
Great content encourages people to link and share your pages. This shows search engines that your pages are interesting and authoritative. This will led to success, as search engines want to show the most interesting and authoritative pages at the top of their search results.
Links are important but never choose quantity over quality. Quality, relevant links are a lot more useful and important to your search ranking than hundreds of weak links that could penalise you for Spam. Building links and your content go hand-in-hand, the more great content you have on your site the more chance you have of building quality links from relevant pages.
The key to both of these points is, if you have content worth sharing and linking to, then you will build quality links naturally, improving your authority and relevance.
A Simple SEO Guide
1. Create excellent, useful, shareable content. Try to use phrases and words that people will use when searching for your product or service.
2. Make it easy for people to share and link to your content. Include social media links on your content and also share the content on your own social media sites.
3. Keep doing it! The more content you have to share, the more links you can build.
Create great content, and make it relevant, research into what kind of content your potential customers are looking for. Create a great site that is optimised for search engines and make it easy for your content to be shared.
If you do all this, you’ll soon start to see your site climb the search ranking ladder, and in turn your website traffic will increase.
